CHAPTER 7

Emmerson

Taylor drops me off at the airport for my early morning flight. We’ve spent a few days in Tennessee with an agent checking out apartments, and meeting the coach and officials. We caught up with Ashton too, who was on the same flight as us, and he seemed excited about the move. Taylor is a little bit distracted while we’re away as he tells me his dad has tried to call him a couple of times over the last few days, and he hasn’t seen him in a long time. He makes no bones about the fact he doesn’t want to call him back.

The whole moving thing is slightly daunting to me, especially to a new city I’ve never been to. But it is kind of exciting at the same time.

On the plane, I read my book, or try to, but my mind hasn’t stopped swimming in thoughts about me and Taylor since last week.

I met up with Susie and Cindy for lunch the day before we went to Nashville and had a good old heart-to-heart about it. They are both concerned for me. Susie doesn't believe that Taylor and I have anything to worry about… but Cindy is worried that I would be alone a lot in a strange city where I don’t know anyone.

I know Maddison will also have an honest perspective on the whole situation, which I’m sort of not looking forward to, as she can be very direct. I’m curious as to what she thinks, though. While Maddie has met Taylor, she’s not in our direct circle all the time, so she will give me an unbiased opinion about things.

I scramble off the plane, not from choice, but because everyone is pushing and shoving like crazy.

My cell buzzes just after I’ve collected my luggage, and I see it’s Mads calling, probably in the fast lane, ready to pick me up, wondering where I am.

“Hey, Mads, I’m here!” I texted her from the plane to say I’d landed. She said she’d circle around in her hot pink barbie Jeep so she didn’t have to park and walk five hundred miles to the terminal. I’m sure her car won’t be hard to miss.

“Great, sweetie! I’ve been circling around, so I’ll have to go around again. I’ll stop in bay four…”

“Okay, I’ve just grabbed my luggage. It’s a madhouse in here.”

“I’ll see you in a sec!”

We hang up, and I clamber along with my suitcase, a duffel bag, and my vanity case, all loaded onto the cart, and make for the doors.

As soon as I step out into the Florida heat, it hits me like a ton of bricks. I reach for my sunglasses from my small purse and slide them on… just as Mads’ hot pink Jeep flies past. Nope, not hard to miss. I start to pick up the pace, waving my hand as I push the cart along the rickety sidewalk toward the pink flash.

She pulls up to the curb a little farther up and comes to an abrupt halt.
